Making as Pedagogy

Fieldnotes is a documentary record of a making-led teaching programme carried out in the Prototype Unit at the Manchester School of Architecture in 2011.

The made works are alphanumerically organised into a series of six separate booklets related to sequential project stages and are supported by observations and reflective thoughts. The publication includes the following: 1. Essays and dialogues, 2. Photographs of prototypes, 3. Photographs of made books, 4. Drawings of a pavilion project,  5. Photographs of a pavilion construction, 6. Design projects.

The book makes inventive use of standard production techniques and readily available stock papers typically found in educational documentation. It was designed in collaboration with graphic designer Sarah McHugh.

The publication has been supported by CEBE (Centre for Education in the Built Environment) Innovative Projects in Learning and Teaching.
